MOT preparation checklist

Prepare for an MOT without treating the official test as a service, repair estimate or future guarantee.

Published and reviewed: 29 July 2026

Important: this guide supports preparation and comparison. It cannot inspect a vehicle, confirm safety or diagnose a fault.

Check the timing

Confirm the current status and allow enough time for possible repair or retest. Use current official guidance rather than an old reminder.

Make the vehicle inspectable

Remove items that block seats, belts, the boot or inspection points. Provide keys and locking wheel-nut tools.

Simple visible checks

Check lamps, washers, wipers, mirrors, tyres and plates without dismantling the vehicle or attempting unsafe repairs.

Known faults and warning lights

Tell the provider about messages, intermittent faults, modifications and previous advisories. Clearing a code does not fix the condition.

Agree the next step

The test and repairs are separate. Decide how quotations and approvals will be handled and read all advisories after the result.

Your next step

Use the service hub to prepare the right vehicle details, understand fulfilment options and create a focused list of questions before contacting a provider.
